Since getting home from New Zealand, I haven’t done too much travelling. There have been a few trips here and there, like to Revelstoke, and down into Glacier National Park, but mostly we’ve been mountain biking, skiing, working, visiting with friends, and catching up with family.

When I talked to a friend, Ryan, one day about making a trip, though, I got that familiar itch to hit the road and see new things. In the interest of time and money, we decided to make it a slightly shorter trip and kept it to a fairly simple road trip to save on hotels, flights, and car rentals.

After looking at many options, we decided on Utah, where Ryan had been several times before. I’ve always wanted to visit Utah, and everything that I’ve heard people say about it just made me want to see it even more.

Looking back now, Utah was even more incredible than I had imagined. For some reason, I had imagined it as a completely red sandstone landscape with some cliffs, and wide open areas, as well as maybe a few canyons and mountains. But I had no idea how varying and diverse it was. From the Zion Narrows, to the sculpted formations at Goblin Valley, and the steep walls of Horseshoe bend (technically Arizona, but who’s keeping track) to the white shores of Lake Powell. Never mind the landscapes that look like mars, the bentonite hills, the indescribable landscapes down Hole in the Rock Road.

Utah was way more than I had expected, and we were only able to cover a small corner of the state. And even in that, there were so many places that we weren’t able to visit.
