Review: Peak Design Leash Camera Strap

So, when you get right down to it, there’s not much to say about a camera strap. They all serve the same purpose of hanging the camera around your neck or slung across your chest and that’s about all that they need to do. But, there are differences in the strap material, how they are attached to the camera, how easy they are to adjust the length, and, of course, how they look and feel. I do have good news, however, because if you’re on the hunt for a new camera strap, you don’t need to look any further than Peak Design.

I like to use their Leash strap because it’s super light, minimal and does everything that I need it to. I have a Sony a6000 which is a small mirrorless camera so I don’t need much from a strap, but even if I had a heavier camera I would still probably use this strap. Usually I have my camera on a backpack strap using the Peak Design Capture Clip or I have it across my chest on the strap, so it’s never really hanging off of my neck and doesn’t need to be any wider or heavier than the leash. But, I definitely understand if you prefer a wider strap, different colours, or have a heavier DSLR camera. If that’s the case, then something like Peak Design’s Slide Strap. Peak design also has a strap comparison page that is very helpful.

You might be able to see a trend forming here, where a lot of the gear that I recommend is made by Peak Design. I have no ties or affiliation to the company so I am only recommending their gear because after trying several other products and companies and doing a lot of research, Peak Design is far ahead of the competition. The quality and innovation that goes into everything that Peak Design makes is phenomenal and since discovering them, they are always my first stop when I need to get some new gear. There have been several times that I’ve been looking for something (like the rain jacket or capture clip and it’s as if these guys had read my mind and created exactly what I needed.

The quick connect system using anchors:

But now, let’s take a step back and I’ll tell you why I decided to get the Peak Design Strap in the first place. Like all cameras, mine came with the standard Sony strap which is made of thin webbing and plastic. I wasn’t really interested in getting a new strap immediately so I used it for a while. The biggest problem that I came across was that it was really difficult to attach to the loops on the camera so every time that I wanted to take it on or off of the camera, it was a huge waste of time. It also wasn’t very comfortable or supportive and had minimal adjustability.

With the Peak Design straps, however, they attach using a system that they call anchors. Anchors are little plastic tokens on a loop of string that you hitch onto the attachments of your camera. The straps then click on and off of these anchors with the push of a button. It really couldn’t be any easier.

The anchors are also incredibly durable and I’ve had a set of anchors on my camera for over 2 years with lots of hard wearing and they are showing no signs of weakness or damage at all. The stringy-bit of the anchor is made of Kevlar cord which is rated for over 100lbs.

Check out the video below to see what the anchors are all about!

The Leash Strap:

Besides the anchors, the strap itself is very durable. All of the Peak Design straps are made of webbing similar to seatbelts which is very strong, non-abrasive, and feels awesome in your hands and around your neck. I’ve had my strap for several years and it still looks like when I first bought it.

It’s also easy to change the length of the strap and it’s like a simple adjuster like you would find on a backpack strap. You slide it one way to make the strap shorter, and slide it the other way to make it longer.

So, if you happen to find yourself looking for a camera strap and want one that ticks all of the boxes for strength, comfort, quick and easy attachments, and looks, then Peak Design is sure to have something for you!
