DESCRIPTION

Roy’s Peak is one of the most popular hikes around Wanaka and from the peak you have an awesome view of the entire area. The entire climb is in the open with no cover from the sun so on a warm or windy day it can be quite a ruthless hike. No matter how grueling it is, however, the view from the top is worth it.

To get to the top there is a trail that winds its way up the hillside to my right. You then reach the ridge and you have the option of hiking straight up the ridge, or taking the main trail which is longer, but not as steep. We opted to head straight up the ridge and Hilary took this picture as I was catching my breath after one of the steep sections.

I keep thinking that it would be really cool to spend the night somewhere along the ridge of Mount Roy, so stay tuned for more photos in the future if my plans hopefully work out! I’ve also put up a post about climbing Roy’s Peak as part of the New Zealand trip report so check that out for more info and photos!
